Friday Night Flag Football Details

2024 Flag Football Details

WHEN AND WHERE

  • All games are played at Bay Head Park on Friday nights.
  • Each team will play 8 regular season games.
  • Games are tentatively set to begin on Friday April 5th (Whether permitting).
  • No games are schedule for the Friday night of Memorial Day Weekend.
  • Playoff and Championship games are tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 7th.
  • All teams DO NOT make the playoffs.
  • If we have rainout dates, makeup games will be rescheduled which will create nights where teams have doubleheaders.
  • If we have multiple rainout dates and run out of time to make up games on Friday nights, we will make alternative plans which may include playing those makeup games on Saturday or Sunday.

DIVISIONS

  • Divisions are formed based on the current 2023-2024 school year:
    • Kindergarten and 1st Grade
    • 2nd and 3rd Grade
    • 4th and 5th Grade
    • 6th and younger 7th Grade
    • Older 7th and 8th Grade
    • 9th Grade

UNIFORMS

  • All players will receive a team jersey and team shorts.
  • Players are expected to wear the uniforms provided.

PRACTICES

  • Practices are scheduled for 1 hour prior to each game unless otherwise indicated by your child's coach.
  • Coaches are permitted to have 1 voluntary practice during the week.

HOW ARE ROSTERS FORMED

  • Rosters will consist of 10 players MAX.
  • A roster of 10 submitted by a coach will take precedence over any friend request.
  • If a roster is submitted by a coach and it does not have 10 players, the rest of the roster will be completed by the league commissioner.
  • Once the players have been sorted by coaches roster, the rest of the players will be placed on a team based off of friend request.
  • NOT ALL REQUESTS WILL BE GRANTED!
  • The league does everything they can to grant everyone's requests. Unfortunately, there are times when those requests cannot be granted. (If a group of 11 or more kids all request to play on the same team, the league will separate those requests into 2 teams).
  • When registering your child, there is a section for you to add friend/coach requests. Only the first 2 friend requests will be considered.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED

  • All players are required to have a mouth piece in order to play.
  • All players must bring their own water bottle with their name clearly marked on the bottle.
  • It is also highly recommended that each player have football cleats.

Cape Future Stars

2024 FUTURE STARS

WHAT IS IT

Cape Friday Night Flag Football is proud to introduce the Future Stars flag football program. This program is designed to teach our kindergarten and 1st grade players the fundamentals of flag football without sacrificing the competitive play that separates Cape Friday Night Flag Football from all other flag football programs in the area. Our Future Stars program is designed for all kindergarten and 1st grade flag football players to learn the basic fundamentals of flag football and will include practice time, run by Joe Marino, for all players within this division. These practices will be held on either Tuesday or Wednesday each week for all players regardless of the team they are placed on.

Joe Marino has been a part of the Cape Flag Football family for several years now and is a wonderful coach and mentor for the players. I'm proud to have him a part of the Cape Football family and I am truly grateful for his time and the dedication that it takes to teach our Future Stars what it takes to be a Cape Cougar!

HOW DOES IT WORK

  • All players will be placed onto individual teams and assigned a coach just like the older age groups.
  • The head coaches of those teams will work with Joe Marino to plan joint practices where every player learns the fundamentals of flag football as well as standard plays that they will run during the games on Friday nights.
  • Each team will be provided a common playbook to use for games on Friday nights.

If you have any questions/concerns or need help with registration, please contact Jason Worley at jasonworley19@gmail.com

2024 Flag Football Rules

2024 Flag Football Rules For All Age Groups

ROSTERS

  • Team rosters are 10 players MAX.
  • Games are played 6 players vs 6 players for all age groups.

FIELD DIMENSIONS

  • Field is 30 yards wide and 40 yards long. The end zones are an additional 5 yards each.
  • A team achieves a 1st down when reaching the 20 yard line (Midfield).

CLOCK MANAGEMENT

  • Two 25 minute running clock halves (5 minute break at half)
  • Two (2) 30-second timeouts per half.
  • If a timeout is called after a touchdown, the extra point will be an untimed down and the clock will restart at the snap of the next play.
  • The clock will only stop for time-outs and injuries unless it is the last minute of the half.
  • The clock will stop in the final minute of each half on these actions:
    • Incompletions
    • Out of Bounds
    • Change of Possession
    • Penalties. If it’s an offensive penalty the clock will start on the official unless it is a dead ball foul.

OFFENSIVE POSSESSIONS

  • Coin flip determines choice of possession or direction (The team that wins the coin flip can elect to defer to the 2nd half)
  • Each possession starts at the 5 yard line except after an interception. Intercepting team begins their possession where their flag was pulled.
  • 3 Players must be on the Line of Scrimmage AND 3 players must be behind the Line of Scrimmage. The Center counts as 1 player on the LOS.
  • Only one player can be in motion at a time.
  • The offensive team has three downs to get a first down at mid-field, then 4 downs to score once they have crossed mid-field.
  • No rushing the QB unless the QB fakes a handoff.
  • Laterals are allowed but if the ball hits the ground the ball is spotted where it first hits the ground.
  • Teams switch sides at halftime.

SNAPPING THE FOOTBALL

  • The ball MUST be snapped from off the ground. The Center may turn sideways to snap the ball.

THE PLAY IS DEAD WHEN THE FOLLOWING OCCURS TO THE BALL CARRIER

  • Flag is pulled.
  • Runner’s knee touches the ground.
  • Runner steps out of bounds.
  • Runner dives, jumps or leaps; ball is spotted where the runner left his feet and a penalty is assessed.
  • If the runner loses his flag then he must be touched with at least one hand before he is considered down.
  • The ball carrier can spin to avoid their flag being pulled but cannot flag guard.
  • No fumbles. (a fumbled, or stripped ball is dead and placed at the spot of the fumble with the offensive team retaining possession)

NO TACKLING OR BLOCKING (Stationary picks are allowed but the player is not permitted to move)

  • Tackling and Blocking will result in a 15 yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. Any player receiving 2 Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties in the same game will be ejected.

PASS GAME RULES

  • The sack count starts on the snap of the ball.
  • If the QB does not release the ball before time expires, the result of the play is a sack and the ball stays at the line of scrimmage.
  • All players are eligible.
  • Forward pass must be overhand AND beyond the line of scrimmage.
  • A receiver must have one foot in bounds when making a reception.
  • 2nd & 3rd Grade, and 4th & 5th Grade Divisions ONLY. The QB can HAND or PITCH the ball off to another player that is lined up behind the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball and that player can throw the ball within the allotted time.
  • Interceptions can be returned for a TD. If the intercepting teams flag is pulled before they reach the end zone, their offensive possession will begin where their flag was pulled.

SCORING

  • Touchdowns = 6 points
  • Extra Point (5 yard line) = 1 point
  • Extra Point (10 yard line) = 2 points

MERCY RULE

  • If a team is up by 24 or more pts they only have 2 downs to get a first down and 2 downs to score.
  • The team that is behind by 24 or more points will start their offensive possession at the opponents 10 yard line and get 4 downs to score.
  • Regular game rules apply once the game is back below 24 pts.

OVERTIME (ONLY IN THE PLAYOFFS)

  • Overtime period will take place with each team receiving a possession.
  • Coin flip determines choice of possession. The team that wins the coin flip has the choice to go on offense first or second.
  • Possession begins at the opponents 10 yard line. (both teams will go in the same direction)
  • Offensive team will get 2 downs to score.
  • If a touchdown is scored, a team can elect to go for a 1 or 2 point conversion.
  • If the Defense intercepts the ball and returns it for a TD the game is over. If the intercepting team has their flag pulled before they reach the end zone, it is a turn over on downs and the intercepting team goes on offense starting at the opponents 10 yard line.
  • If the game is still tied at the end of overtime, overtime will be repeated until there is a winner.
  • Teams alternate first possession each overtime period.
